AVJennings

Community and Home Safety event.

On Saturday, 11 May 2024, Riverton had the pleasure of hosting representatives from Queensland Police, Jimboomba Fire & Rescue, and Logan SES at the Riverton North Sales and Information Centre.

20 May 2024

The event provided valuable community and home safety tips, and Riverton residents enjoyed afternoon tea while learning from our knowledgeable presenters.

Presenters and Topics:

  • Queensland Police: Ben and Trent spoke about Crime Prevention and Community Safety.

  • Jimboomba Fire & Rescue: Jason and Les discussed Home Fire Safety.

  • Logan SES: Tim and Liz covered Flood and Storm Safety.

Key Tips from Our Presenters:

  • Most crimes are crimes of opportunity, so don’t make it easy.

  • Use security alarms and cameras or doorbell cameras. If you must choose between alarms and cameras, opt for alarms as they reduce the time intruders spend in your home.

  • Register your CCTV cameras with Queensland Police Services' Community Camera Alliance to prevent crime and make the community safer

  • Take photos of serial numbers of electronic items to help with recovery if stolen.

  • Keeping your home and landscaping well-presented acts as a deterrent to home invasions and robberies.

  • Install a security door and use it; there’s no point in having one if you don’t lock it.

  • Lock all windows and back doors when you’re out or at night.

  • Introduce yourself to your neighbours for passive surveillance and potential new friendships.

  • Check and maintain your smoke detectors monthly. Smoke alarms save lives as senses go to sleep at night.

  • Riverton can become isolated during floods, so prepare with food, supplies, medication, and fuel for generators for at least a few days.

  • Use backpacks to transport pets if you need to evacuate.

  • Maintain gutters free from dry leaf buildup.

  • Have an emergency safety plan and discuss it with your family.

  • Only use SES for emergencies, not for non-urgent tasks like attending events or collecting items.

  • Don’t take unnecessary risks in an emergency; avoid getting on your roof or in the pool during a flood.

  • Be aware that ambulances may be limited and might not be able to reach you.

  • Don’t hesitate to call emergency services if you’re unsure—better safe than sorry.
